Sometimes, you need to check if multiple conditions are met to decide what to do next. For example, you have list of friends and you want to know what gift you will send them. Here are the options:
“If they are single and over 40, you would send them book, otherwise, you will send a CD.”
As you can see, there are two conditions:
- If they are single
- If they are over 40
So, you need to decide a single person meets both condition or not. How can you do it in Excel?
As you can see, the trick here is to use the AND function. This function accepts two or more arguments and it returns TRUE or FALSE.
AND returns TRUE if all conditions are TRUE, otherwise, it returns FALSE.
From the list of our friends, you can see that only Andy Johnson is both single and over 50. Other people are either not single or not older than 40 or both (for example, Martin Olsen).
AND function can be very useful when you want to test many conditions, not just one.
